Jammu: Barely a week before the Indian soldiers were ambushed and killed by Pakistani troops near Line of Control (LoC) in Mendhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir, tension had escalated between the two countries over the construction of a bunker in Churanda village by the Indian Army.
Indian Army claimed that it was just repairing an old bunker while Pakistani soldiers said the Indians were making a new bunker. The Pakistani Army has indulged in firing along the LoC since October 2012, according to the residents of the area.
Churanda village is situated 10 thousand feet from the sea level and is very close to the Line of Control. The route to the village passes through high mountain ranges. A 70-year-old woman Reshma from Churanda had crossed the LoC and went to Pakistan occupied Kashmir. After her crossing over, the Indian Army stepped up surveillance in the area, which the Pakistanis had objected to.
Villages say that on October 16, 2012 some houses were damaged and three people killed in the firing by the Pakistan Army. The villagers say they are forced to live in fear due to the firing.
Two villagers - Taj Din and Mohammad Din said that their houses were damaged due to Pakistani firing and hope that the government will ensure that peace is maintained at the LoC.
