"A disappointment beyond description," the China Daily said in an editorial, as the Athens hurdles winner and one of China's biggest stars publicly apologised to the 1.3 billion Chinese.
The newspaper added that while Liu, the face of the Games, could not repay "the unreserved support from his compatriots" he remained a hero.
According to Forbes magazine's rich list, the popular Liu earned about $23 million last year in endorsements.
The United States and Britain won early golds on Tuesday, with Anna Tunnicliffe winning the women's Laser yachting gold medal for the United States and Paul Goodison taking won men's Laser class to add another British gold.
German outsider Jan Frodeno outsprinted outsprinted Canada's Simon Whitfield to win the men's triathlon by a narrow five seconds.
Athens silver-medallist Bevan Docherty of New Zealand took bronze while the race favourite and the world's top-ranked triathlete, Javier Gomez of Spain, faded to fourth in the closing stages.
