KARWAR: People living within a radius of five km of the Kaiga Nuclear Power Generating Station commenced an indefinite strike in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Monday demanding their rehabilitation.Leaders including Shantaram Nayak, Yamuna Gaonkar and Shamnath Naik who addressed the villagers on the occasion said that the villagers had been demanding their rehabilitation since 1996.They alleged that no development had taken place in the villages including Kuchegar, Balemane and Hartuga, which were within a five km radius of the Kaiga station, although the station was established 25 years ago. They said that free movement was also denied to the villagers.Further, the villagers were not provided job opportunities in the station, they alleged.Stating that the villagers were always in the grip of fear of getting affected by radioactivity, the agitators demanded that they be rehabilitated at the earliest. The protestors said that the agitation would continue till their demands were met.Further they would oppose the establishment of the fifth and sixth units at the Kaiga station.Shamdas Naik said that nuclear power stations might have been established in the cities and people might be living in the vicinity of nuclear power stations without fear of radiation as claimed by site director JP Gupta.
