Kalbadevi inferno: Preliminary report recommends urgent procurement of mini fire tenders
The report calls for upgrading human resource by filling up vacant posts and using modern equipment.

Mumbai: A short circuit was the reason for the fire at Kalbadevi in Mumbai on May 9, 2015, according to the preliminary report. The report recommended a new standard operating procedure to be put in place within three months. It also suggested setting up of mini fire stations to reduce response time in congested areas.

Fire personnel should focus only on the core function of fire fighting and firemen should not be burdened with inspecting buildings and non-objection certificates, the report added.

A fire had erupted at a four storey building in Mumbai's Kalbadevi area on May 9. A portion of the under-repair building had collapsed as the fire spread across all its four floors and gutted wooden beams and columns.

The Kalbadevi inferno had left four officers dead. Mumbai fire brigade chief officer Sunil Nesarikar succumbed to his burn injuries on May 25.
