New Delhi: People’s Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti was detained on Tuesday while she was participating in a bandh in Kashmir, calling for scrapping of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act.
Kashmir remained tense over the alleged rape of two women by security forces. Hurriyat has called for two more days of shut down, despite the Chief Minister ordering a judicial probe into the case on Monday.
Police and paramilitary troopers patrolled Srinagar and curfew has been imposed in parts of the valley.
Authorities fear that protests might spill over.
Mehbooba alleged that the statements of the victims’ kin were not taken into consideration by police.
"The judicial inquiry will probe the greater aspects of the case but police, as per law, should file an FIR based on the statement of the kin of the victims," Mehbooba said.
She said she and her party activists were not allowed to visit Shopian to express sympathy with the affected family.
The PDP president also criticised the government for imposing undeclared curfew in the valley and placing Hurriyat leaders under house arrest.
As the PDP leaders were returning to party headquarters, police took them into preventive custody and lodged them at Kothibagh police station.
