Keeping up with the newest trends in communication technology, the Kerala University (KU) has tied up with BSNL RTTC (Regional Telecom Training Centre) to offer a first-of-its-kind diploma course to tech-freaks.
Claimed to be a unique vocational course, the MoU for the one-year advanced PG diploma in Communication Engineering was signed by RTTC and Kerala University at the Vice-Chancellor’s chamber the other day.
It is the Opto-Electronics Department on the Kariavattom campus of the University which is offering the course. Initially, there will be 30 seats. Those with BTech or MSc Physics degree can apply.
’Mobile is such a dominating trend, so a course related to mobile and other new communication technology modes would attract many. The highlight of the course is that it is more a practical-oriented course and not only theory-based,’’ said V P Mahadevan Pillai, Head of Opto-Electronics Department of the KU.
He said that the RTTC, which has advanced training labs in new mode technologies, could be the best place to offer the practical course. The students will be given classes in the Opto-Electronics Department and in the various BSNL training centres. An RTTC official said that the course material includes mobile engineering, optical fibre engineering, Pen-Based Computing, Ultra-mobile PC (Umpc) and other topics related to communication technology.
However, it would be an expensive course, considering that the fee could cross Rs one lakh. Officials said that the University will soon invite applications for the diploma course, which will start this year itself.
