The prize money for this year is Rs 7.6 lakh, with the winner of the main marathon receiving Rs 2.4 lakh.

Kolkata: The City of Joy also joined the marathon bandwagon on Sunday.

About 15,000 people are running in the Kolkata Marathon today. The marathon was flagged off frorm Red Road at 7.30 this morning.

The main marathon is divided into two parts, the men's section and women's section.

Besides the main marathon of 42.36 km — the only in the city — there will be a mini marathon for the women, covering 10.5 km, and a 4.2-km Fun Run for children, senior citizens and others.

KC Ramu of the Army Sports Institute (Pune) won the full marathon by finishing the race in 2 hours, 26 minutes and nine seconds.

Ramu, who won the Bangalore International Marathon last year, succeeded in his first attempt at the Kolkata Marathon.

In the Women's Marathon, Reena Das retained the crown by completing the 10.5 km distance in 44 minutes and 40 seconds.

The celebrities, who lent colour to the event by taking part in the fun run of 4.5 km, included cine stars Prosenjit, June Malia and Sabyasachi Chakraborty and renowned tennis coach Akhtar Ali.

Several bigwigs of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) also took part in the Marathon that was flagged off by Kolkata Police Commissioner Prasun Mukherjee.

The prize money for this year is Rs 7.6 lakh, with the winner of the main marathon receiving Rs 2.4 lakh and the top three contestants being taken to international marathons.

The mini marathon champion got Rs 60,000.
