KOTTAYAM: After failing to meet the deadline set by the Kerala High Court to clear the pile up of garbage at the Vadavathoor dumping yard, Kottayam Municipality on Monday said it was still trying to find a location where the garbage could be used as landfill. The High Court had given three months’ time to the municipality to clear the garbage that had piled up for several months, before January 15 to facilitate Ramki group to effectively operate its treatment plant at Vadavathoor. The lack of support from political parties is the main reason for the local body failing to find a suitable location, municipal chairman Sunny Kalloor said. The municipality had made an attempt to remove the waste to the land owned by the municipality at Kodimatha. But the move was opposed by politicians who also instigated the locals against dumping of waste there.“Unless all sections of society extend their support, it will be difficult to solve the issue,” Kalloor said. The municipality has informed the court about the situation. “We are making all attempts to find an alternative site. Once we remove the piled up garbage, the problem will be solved,” he said. The municipality has some plans to solve the issue which will be revealed at the right time, he said. The Ramki group is already engaged in the construction of the leach plant which will solve the environmental problems at Vadavathoor, he said. Meanwhile, Vijayapuram panchayat authorities said they were against the functioning of the yard in the panchayat area. The panchayat is in the process of moving the court on the issue, its president Jeeva kumar said. The garbage had piled up at Vadavathoor as the functioning of the plant was halted for months owing to differences of opinion between the operator and the local body.
