Madurai VC accused of accepting bribe
VC Maruthamuthu allegedly accepted Rs 2 lakh from a professor as illegal gratification for appointing him as Dean.

New Delhi: A senior police official said in Madurai on Friday that the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Madurai Kamaraj University has been accused of accepting Rs 2 lakh from a professor as illegal gratification for appointing him as the Dean.

Head of the Department of English (Research) Prof M Kannan has lodged a complaint alleging that the VC Maruthamuthu accepted Rs 2 lakh from him a month ago, Superintendent of Police (Madurai Rural), T S Anbu told PTI.

Kannan said, in the complaint, he had more than 20 years of experience in English language research and had approached the VC with a request to appoint him as the Dean.

"Qualifications alone are not enough. Posts will not come to you freely," the VC told him, claimed Kannan in the complaint.

According to him, a close aide of the VC had advised him to give the money to the VC for getting the post.

Following this, Kannan met the VC at a wedding hall in Madurai on February 9 and allegedly handed over the amount in a gift bag.

Though Kannan was called for the interview, the VC allegedly told a Syndicate meeting on Wednesday that none of the applicants had qualified for being appointed as the Dean.

The VC allegedly suggested to apply for post six months later and told him "not to discuss money matters", when Kannan approached the VC and asked to return the money on Thursday.

The professor lodged the complaint against the VC last night, requesting the police to inquire into the matter, Anbu said, adding he has deputed a DSP to investigate into it.

The Vice Chancellor has declined to make any comment on the matter.
