THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘Mahaphon Clang’, a band made up of Indian percussionist Ramesh Shotham and the German quartet ‘Lautstark!4’ will perform at  Co-Bank Towers in the city on Friday. Mahaphon Clang, according to the band, is an amalgam of the Sanskrit word ‘Maha’; ‘Phon’, which signifies sound; and ‘Clang’ - just ‘clang.’ Together, they mean ‘Great Sounding Clang.’ The band consists of Ramesh Shotham (percussion and vocals), Jan F Kurth (vocals), Matthias Kurth (electric guitar), Lutz Stern (saxophone and clarinet) and Demain Kappenstein (drums). Their music is best described as ‘multi-folkloral urban improvisational music,’ according to a statement issued here by the organisers, Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum. Streun, Kappenstein, Matthias and Kurth have been working together since 2005 as Lautstark!4. They released their first album in 2008. Born in Chennai, Shotham played guitar and drums during his high school years. He later formed a rock band ‘Human Bondage’ performing in major Indian cities. He is also the co-founder of one of the first Indo-jazz-fusion bands, ‘Sangam.’ For passes, contact Goethe-Zentrum Trivandrum at 0471-3013018.
