CHENNAI: For college band, Franks got the Funk, the journey started over two years ago when Bjorn Surrao (vocals), then just out of school, founded the group. And with the rest of their line-up — Vikram Ashok (keys), Sajith Satya (bass), Shashank Vijay (drums), Rajan Chelliah (guitar) in place, the often asked question is, ‘Who’s Frank?’ With their many jam sessions, cultural performances and of late, studio time to record their debut album, it seems the imaginary Frank has finally developed an identity. Bjorn explains with enthusiasm, “Frank is like our mascot if you will. He’s a very mysterious person – something like the Mentalist (referring to the series on TV), only thing he likes is music.”With five songs on their album The Next Level, recorded over a lounging three months in the studio, expectations will certainly be high at the launch. Sajith shares, “We went to the studio everyday and admitted we slacked off a little, but no regrets because I think the album has come out really well.” No doubt, musicians do need to take their time while creating their art, after all the funk simply can’t be forced. Watch out for one of their tracks titled Old Man inspired by a rubber glow-in-the-dark skeleton that sits in the jam room with the band.Covering a mixed genre of alternative rock-electronica-fun funk, their album The Next Level will be launched at the Museum Theatre, August 11 at 7pm.
