Mumbai: A probe by the Army into the 2008 Malegaon blasts has differed with the findings of Maharashtra ATS as it (Army report) claimed that the prime accused Lt Colonel Prasad Shrikant Purohit kept the senior officials in the loop to join a charitable organisation.
It is not yet clear whether he categorically mentioned the name of Abhinav Bharat (charitable organisation) to his seniors or not.
The probe report accessed by CNN-News 18 suggests that Purohit informed his superiors in the Indian Army about right-wing activities in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat.
The ATS report, however, mentioned that Purohit was an active leader and trustee of Abhinav Bharat but none of the 60 witnesses that appeared before the Court of Inquiry corroborated the claim made by the ATS.
Moreover, the charge made by the Maharashtra ATS that Purohit procured RDX from Jammu & Kashmir was also contested. According to the Army, their officers spotted an ATS official outside a co-accused Sudhakar Chaturvedi's house where traces of RDX were found. This raised speculation whether the RDX was planted in his house or not.
Lt Col Purohit was arrested on November 5, 2008 for his role in the Malegaon blasts. Besides Lt Col Purohit, Pragya Singh Thakur, Shivnarayan Kalsangra, Shyam Sahu, Ramesh Upadhya, Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay, Rakesh Dhawade, Jagdish Mhatre, Sudhakar Dwivedi, Sudhakar Chaturvedi and Pravin Takalki have been arrested.
