CUTTACK: For over 12 years, a man of Baranga in Cuttack district has been allegedly subjected to sever police atrocities by being implicated in false cases. As a result of this, he has suffered mental imbalance and physical disabilities. A petition has been filed in the Orissa High Court seeking compensation for his sufferings as well as provisioning for his medical treatment and livelihood. The petitioner 49-year-old Laxmidhar Roul of Jayapur Belagachia under Barang police limits alleged that he had been deliberately targeted by the police for no reason. He had been picked up by the police and subjected to serious physical and mental torture time and again over a period of 12 years. False criminal cases had been registered against him and he was put in custody. But he had been acquitted in all the cases.Roul alleged that he had been arrested by the police as many as 12 times from 1992 to 2004. It has been further stated by him that he had spent about 16 years of his life in custody though all the cases had ended in acquittal. As he was subjected to torture, he had developed mental problems as well as serious physical disabilities. He had come to such a point that he was unable to earn his livelihood. He had approached various authorities in the State Government and had also filed petitions with the Chief Minister. But none paid any heed.As a result, he is leading a wretched life. With the prime years of his life lost, he has no one to fall back on. Considering his plight and sufferings due to the alleged illegal action of police, he should be compensated adequately and provided proper treatment and means of livelihood, the petitioner has appealed to the court.
