Less than a week after vigilantes attacked women at a birthday party, a beer guzzling competition organised to mark Friendship Day in Mangalore was cancelled, owing to the ‘vitiated atmosphere’.
Nikhil Pai of ‘Three Hungry Men’, which had organised the event, told Express that though there was no pressure from right-wing groups, keeping the safety of participants in mind, the event planned at Beer Factory in Mangalore was cancelled.
Meanwhile, members of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, Sri Rama Sene and Hindu Yuva Sena submitted a memorandum to Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner N S Channappa Gowda to stop the event.
Ramananda Gowda from Hindu Janajagruti Samiti, in a release, said Friendship Day was a western concept. “There is an international conspiracy to hoist such celebrations on unsuspecting youth and destroy Indian culture,” he charged. He charged alcoholic beverage companies with supporting such celebrations.
