As part of a major initiative to plant 10,000 saplings across the city, Chennai Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy planted 25 saplings in Virugambakkam.
The Mayor planted the saplings at Chinmaya Nagar (Stage 1) and Virugambakkam (near Varasiddhi Vinayagar Koil Street). During the plantation drive, Duraisamy highlighted the problems faced while planting trees in the city. He also urged the organisers not to plant saplings near pavements as it would pose problems to pedestrians.
The green initiative is launched jointly by HCLT foundation and Exnora International. “We plan to plant 340 saplings in Virugambakkam,” said Youth ExNora International national joint secretary A Senthil Kumar and V Anantha Krishnan, administrative head of HCLT.
The saplings will be planted at 22 office locations besides residential areas. “We are involving senior citizens and children in this initiative,” said Senthil. Interestingly, the organisers feel that the biggest challenges are electricity cables and telephone cables which they come across while digging the pits to plant the saplings.
Even the Mayor has highlighted the issue and directed that saplings should not be planted near footpaths, said Senthil. On Saturday, 200 saplings will be planted at Sholingnallur, he added.
