New Delhi: A senior IPS officer in Karnataka ruffled many feathers on Wednesday evening and got the power corridors, not just in Karnataka but across India, buzzing.
DIG (Prisons) D Roopa, in her report submitted to her seniors, made some startling revelations that AIADMK leader Sasikala, housed at a Bengaluru prison in a corruption case, is getting some major leverage in jail, including a special kitchen counter to cook her food.
Her accusations have led Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah to ‘order a high-level inquiry’. While her boss, DGP of prisons HSN Rao might have denied receiving such a report, D Roopa has stood her ground.
The whistle-blower is an IPS officer from Davanagere in Karnataka who holds a post-graduate degree in science. She is married to Munish Moudgil, a Karnataka cadre civil servant.
In her 17-year-career, she generally had low profile postings. She headed the police force in only two small districts: Gadag and Yadgir.
Her outspokenness has earned her more enemies than friends in her circle and beyond. Earlier this year, the IPS officer had hit out at Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha over the transfer of senior IPS officers on central deputation.
While Simha said, citing a news article, that some officers were unhappy with their posting, Roopa took to her Facebook account and asked the MP to “let bureaucracy be free from political endorsements. Because politicisation of bureaucracy does not help the system and society in the long run.”
Roopa is known to be media savvy. A regular Twitterati, she also writes columns for newspapers and has appeared, several times, on Kannada TV channels.
