Met Department declares monsoon arrives in Kerala
Monsoon rains key for cultivation of kharif crops in India.

New Delhi: The Met Department has declared that the South-west monsoon has set in over Kerala more than a week before the normal date of June 1.

Although conditions are favourable for strengthening of the monsoon, the onward movement of monsoon would be primarily on the eastern side.

The monsoon has now advanced further into north Kerala, parts of coastal Karnataka and interior Karnataka and parts of Tamil Nadu.

The Met Department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain at a few places and isolated extremely heavy rainfall (above 25 cm) over West Bengal and Orissa in the next two days.

Monsoon rains are key for cultivation of kharif crops which account for nearly 60 per cent of the farm output of the country. A good kharif season augurs well for a range of goods and services.

The weather office had earlier forecast that monsoon would reach Kerala between May 23 and 25.

Most parts of the State have been receiving widespread pre-monsoon showers, creating the mood of the arrival of the rainy season, known in local parlance as Kalavarsham.
