KOCHI: Cooperation Minister C N Balakrishnan has said that the government will implement minimum wages for Khadi and handloom workers from this year. He was speaking at the statelevel inaugural ceremony of 'Khadi Onam Fair' in Kochi on Monday.
"The wages of those working in the sector are so meagre that they find it difficult to eke out a living. The government had set up a committee to look into the problems being faced by these workers. The committee has submitted its report which recommends minimum wages for the workers," Balakrishnan said."The government will soon constitute another committee to explore how the khadi and handloom sector in the state can be expanded," the minister said. He said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had convened a meeting in this regard. "Around 5,000 new employment will be generated in the sector soon. The gap between the demand and supply of khadi products is high in the state. As the supply is much lesser than the demand, Khadi items are being brought from other states. There is no harm in bringing Khadi items from other states if the supply here is less," Balakrishnan said.
