THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It’s that time of the year when the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) keeps its fingers crossed. The breakdown units of the power utility in the capital city have had their hands full over the past two days with the southwest monsoon wreaking havoc on power installations. In many places in the city, supply lines have snapped after tree branches fell on them. Meanwhile, the public has also started raising complaints about frequent power outages, especially after dark and mostly in the city outskirts with the monsoon setting in in earnest. Power outages hit several places in the city on Wednesday evening including Sreevarahom and Vattiyoorkavu. In the 24 hours up to 8.30 am on Thursday, Thiruvananthapuram city recorded a rainfall of 83 mm, the seventh highest in the State. According to the Met Department, heavy rain is expected over the next two days in the region, a forecast that rubs the smiles off the faces of the KSEB officials. “The pre-monsoon maintenance has been completed. As part of the annual drive, overhanging tree branches have been cut. But we can’t do anything if whole trees are uprooted on to the lines,” said K K Jayakumari, executive engineer, Thiruvananthapuram Urban Electrical Circle, KSEB.In a few places at least, the pre-monsoon maintenance is yet to be completed, but the KSEB officials attribute the delay to various reasons, including the elections which came in between.
