An accident took place on the newly inaugurated Coastal Road tunnel in Mumbai that connects Marine Drive and the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a black-coloured Toyota car hit the corner wall near Cross Passage-05 at 12:37 pm on Thursday. The driver and one passenger travelling in the car were not harmed in the accident.
The 10.8-km-long road has a two-kilometre-long tunnel between Priyadarshini Park and Marine Drive.
The authorities were informed of the accident by a person who called from the nearest Emergency Call Box (ECB) around 12:43 pm. The operator at the Local Operation Maintenance Room (LOMR) received the call and immediately informed the respective department after checking the CCTV camera.
A rescue team with marshals quickly arrived at the site of the accident and called a towing van that reached shortly. The marshals controlled the traffic and cleared two lanes immediately to avoid any jams inside the tunnel.
According to the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident, the steering of the car was loose because of which the car crashed. The vehicle was moving at a speed of 60 km/h when the accident happened.
The south-bound corridor of the coastal road between South Mumbai’s Worli and Marine Drive, also called Mumbai Coastal Road Project Phase 1, was inaugurated by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde last month.
The Coastal Road has reduced the travel time between Worli to Marine Drive to 10 minutes. Vehicular traffic is allowed at this stretch between 6:00 am and 8:00 pm from Monday to Friday.
The speed limit for vehicles on the straight road is 80 km/h, which is reduced to 60 km/h inside the tunnel and at the turning points and entry/exit points, the speed limit set for vehicles is 40 km/h.
