KOLLAM: Six Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists were sentenced to  10-year rigorous imprisonment, after they were found guilty in the murder of SFI leader S Ajayprasad, by an Additional Sessions Court here on Monday.Additional Sessions Court IV Judge R Sudhakaran, while awarding jail term for Vallikkavu Sreenath (25), Sabin (28), Sanil (30), Rajeevan (24), Sunil (26) and Sivaram (27), also imposed a fine of `5,000 each on them. If they fail to pay the fine, the convicts will have to undergo jail term for six more months. The sentence was pronounced under section 304 of the IPC for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.Apart from this, all six were sentenced to six months imprisonment under section 149 for unlawful assembly, another six months under section 148 for rioting armed with deadly weapons and two months under section 142 for being a member of unlawful assembly. The prosecution was able to convince the judge that Ajayprasad, joint secretary of Karunagappally area committee of SFI, was brutally attacked by the RSS activists on July 19, 2007 at Thottathil Junction, Clappana.Ajayprasad was talking to a shopkeeper named Nujumudheen, when the gang attacked him. As many as 64 injuries, inflicted with iron rods and screw drivers, were found on his body. He was moved to Karunagappally Taluk Hospital and later to Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, here he succumbed to the injuries on the following day.The prosecution sources said that they would go in for appeal in the higher court under CrPC section 377. Father of the victim, Shyama Prasad, is also expected to appeal against the verdict. The prosecution is not content with the verdict, as the court had not charged the accused with section 302 (murder) despite the fact that doctors found four fatal injuries inflicted on the victim’s body. Also, 24 witnesses had testified in favour of the prosecution. The prosecution was represented by Parippally R Raveendran, Oachira Anil Kumar, Shiju Thankappan and Asif Rishin in the court.Considering the possibility of a scuffle outside the court, a large number of police force was deployed in the area. BJP-RSS activists and CPM-DYFI workers assembled outside the area were prevented by the police from entering the court premises.
