Balakrishnan, a handloom weaver from the Dindigul district has been selected for the National Handloom Award. He will be felicitated with the Sant Kabir National Award 2023 during the National Handloom Day celebrations on August 7.
This award will be given to Balakrishnan for his saree woven in cotton. 17 people from different states of India were shortlisted for this award. Out of these, 2 people from Tamil Nadu were selected. They are Balasubramaniam from Kanchipuram and Balakrishnan from Dindigul.
Balakrishnan was a member of the Karpaka Vinayagar Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society in Dindigul, which comes under the Tamil Nadu Handloom Department.
Balakrishnan has been weaving for the last 30 years. The raw materials for the cotton sarees he weaves are supplied by the cooperative. The sarees woven here are exported to Tamil Nadu and other states as well.
In this situation, the motifs of elephant, peacock, swan, rudraksha, mango and diamond woven in the cotton saree woven by Balakrishnan were exclusively made for three days and sent to the National Handloom Selection Commission of India through the Sri Karpaka Vinayakar Handloom Weavers Cooperative Society.
Now, this cotton saree has won her the National Handloom Award. Balakrishnan, a handloom weaver, said, “I have been weaving on handlooms for 30 years. Earlier, I used to weave sarees at my home using cotton yarn. All the raw materials I require are provided by the Sangh. I am very thankful to the Central Government as it is giving me an award for the saree I designed”, he said.
“It is gratifying that the Central Government has announced this award to further encourage my hard work in handloom weaving. And it will serve as an example for handloom weavers like me. This is a very happy moment for me,” he added.
