Until a few days back, the Opposition was the sole subject of Natwar's political nightmares, but now Congressmen have jumped into the fray.

New Delhi: Union Minister K Natwar Singh has turned into a political hot potato for Congress which appears to be in a fix in the wake of stepped up Opposition campaign on the Iraqi oil payoffs.

Despite a sizable section of the party wanting him to quit in the larger interests of the organisation, his failure to bite the bullet has left him with little admirers.

The reaction of a senior AICC office bearer that "no one leaves, without being kicked" aptly sums up the sentiments of this section which is concerned over the attempts to target Sonia Gandhi in the issue.

A ministerial colleague of Singh said that the Minister without portfolio has become an embarassment for the government and the party and therefore should take the hint and quit voluntarily.

Another senior party leader said that Singh should have resigned long back. He said the Congress and the Government had become a "victim of overreaction" in the issue arising out of Volcker report which has been trashed by several countries.

A former Union Minister, however, said that now it was "too late" for Singh to resign. "Singh should not resign under pressure. It will neither help the party nor the Government. What is the Inquiry for, if he leaves?".

Another party leader said that Singh has landed the party into a "very unfortunate" situation as he had failed to act on his own despite Gandhi's unequivocal assertions in the matter a fortnight back.
