Thiruvananthapuram: Suspended Congress leader and former external affairs minister Natwar Singh on Saturday indicated he was joining hands with K Karunakaran, who quit the party last year.

Addressing a joint press conference at Karunakaran's residence where the two met for nearly an hour, Natwar Singh said: "Don't you see that this is enough indication that we are joining hands? This is a gradual step towards working together."

"Karunakaran is the senior most political leader of the country and I am here to seek his guidance and discuss national and international issues, especially the Iraq situation. We are strong Nehruvites and we do not want the Nehru legacy to go away," said Natwar Singh.

Karunakaran, who served four terms as Kerala chief minister, said their meeting was very fruitful and friendly.

"We are not against the Congress party. We want the ideology of Panditji (Nehru), Indiraji and Rajivji to be taken forward. This is not the feeling of just a few of us but several people across the country. We have a clear vision of what we are up to," said Karunakaran.

When asked for details of their mission, he said: "Please wait for some more time." After quitting the Congress, Karunakaran had launched his party that was merged with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) last week.

Natwar Singh was suspended from the party this year after an inquiry indicted him and his son Jagat Singh for their role in Iraq's oil-for-food scam.
