New Delhi: Attributing former External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh's outbursts against Congress President Sonia Gandhi, the Congress on Monday said that "his desperation is understandable".
The party said Natwar Singh's outburst is because of the incriminating findings against him by an independent and impartial inquiry committee headed by Justice Pathak.
Stating that the Congress cannot stoop to the level of the language used by Natwar Singh, Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said Natwar Singh's irritation and worry at the findings are natural and it only goes to confirm his sense of guilt.
Briefing mediapersons in Delhi, Singhvi charged that Natwar Singh had lost his sense of balance being scared of the implications of the Justice Pathak Committee report on Volcker allegations regarding the Iraqi Oil for Food scam.
"He is trying to prove his lies and untruth into truth, and that is why he is holding out a threat,” Singhvi said.
"It shows all these years he had no ideological commitment to the party or leadership but was only concerned with the loaves and fishes of office," he added.
Calling upon Natwar Singh not to be worked up by Sonia Gandhi's remark of betrayal of trust, Singhvi said it was a "mild comment" as far as Natwar Singh was concerned.
"Instead of sermonising about civilisation and culture, he should look within to introspect
on his personal and political life,” Singhvi said.
The Congress Spokesman also said, “As far as any decision to take action against Singh by the party is concerned, it is internal to Congress. It is not going to be dictated as regards nature and timing of its action."
