THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said that the State Government will formulate a new policy to prevent sex trade and trafficking and also to bring the culprits under severe punishment.He said this after interacting with Sunita Krishna, who formed the social organisation called Prajwala to fight against such atrocities in Andhra Pradesh.It was the story of Bhavani that social activist Sunita Krishna presented before the Chief Minister here on Saturday to explain the magnitude of sex rackets and human trafficking crimes that plague the country.Bhavani from Andhra Pradesh got married to Amar from Delhi and in the pretext of taking her to a relative’s place, her husband sold her to a brothel for Rs 45,000. It was at this brothel that Bhavani found at least 12 others who were married to Amar and brought to the brothel. By the time she was 17, she had AIDS and also had to subject herself to five abortions.In a power point presentation that lasted half-an-hour, Sunita explained the various aspects of sex trade and the mafia involved in this. She said that at least 30 lakh women have been forcefully pulled into the profession. Almost 88 percent of them are below the age of 14, she said. The Chief Minister had interacted with Sunita Krishna as part of the Government move to take strong steps against sex trade and associated crimes.
