CHENNAI: Proposing a paradigm shift in the handling of garbage within Chennai Corporation limits, Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy on Wednesday said that the civic body was launching a pilot project which, if successful, would turn the city into a litter-free zone. Addressing a gathering of Corporation engineers and contractors, Duraisamy said, “A pilot project, which will be soon launched in the metropolis, could turn the city into a litter-free zone as the garbage collection-and-disposal system is geared for major changes.” The present system of handling garbage includes collecting garbage from streets, moving it to garbage transfer stations and then to dump yards. The civic body proposes a simplification of this process. Under the new proposal, garbage will be collected from the streets and stored in four to 10 different points in every ward using a closed bin. The accumulated garbage will be sent directly to dump yards. “Timing of collection of garbage from streets will also be changed under the new proposal. Presently, garbage collection from streets is being done by 6.30 am daily, using tricycles.” “In the new system, it has been proposed to change this to 10.30 am,” the Mayor added.
