CHENNAI: Speakers at a city meeting organised in connection with Woman’s Day celebrations by the Women’s Cell of the Madras School of Social Work on Monday elaborated their achievements and a few challenges faced by social workers. A representative of a special home for the differently abled spoke about the prevailing paucity for manpower in taking care of mentally challenged elders, of late. “Despite people being available to care for mentally challenged minors, not many were forthcoming to assist the grown ups. The caretakers are comfortable to work inconservancy works in the Information Technology sector, rather than giving a helping hand for the differently abled,” she added. Another representative of a Statewide NGO for the differently abled said that about 22 lakh people in Tamil Nadu are suffering some disabilities. “We are encouraging our children to participate in sports and some have even won awards at different levels”, she added.
