NIT Srinagar students won't face any injustice: Smriti Irani
Irani said a team from the HRD ministry would remain in the campus till at least April 11.

New Delhi/Srinagar: Union HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Wednesday said the Jammu & Kashmir government has given her an assurance on the security of the students even as the standoff at the NIT srinagar campus continued for the second day.

After a conversation with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, Irani said a team from the HRD ministry would remain in the campus till at least April 11. Irani is likely to visit NIT Srinagar on April 13.

"Till the exams start, HRD team will remain in the campus. There will be no injustice with the students," said Smriti Irani.

Meanwhile, the HRD Minister also apprised Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh of the situation at the campus. Following this Singh said, "I also had a word with the HRD Secretary and directed him to send two Director-level officials to hold talks with NIT Srinagar students."

However, sources said some non-local students at NIT Srinagar were blowing the issue out of proportion in order to get migration from the college to some other engineering institute in the country.

This came even as the government ruled out a local vs non-local issue at the NIT campus, with Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh saying the government was going all out to maintain law and order.

Referring to Tuesday's police lathicharge on the students, he said, "We accept the police personnel exceeded their brief. We will institute an inquiry."

"Two CRPF companies have been deployed within the campus. Three SSB companies have also been deployed. Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, the government and I are closely monitoring the situation. Security is of paramount importance," he added.

Meanwhile, the non-local students of the institute put forth a list of demands to the institute's director. The students have sought adequate security in the college and also want the Indian flag hoisted at either the main gate or at the fountain in the campus.

Here is the full list of demands of the NIT students:

1. National flag should be hoisted at main gate/fountain (The state flag may be hoisted as well).

2. Permanent security should be provided from outsiders/locals who pelt stones at college students. (Roof tops of houses adjacent to campus make up for a meeting place for goons, even canteen shopkeeper-Khan Restaurant pelt stones on adjacent boys' hostel "Indus").

3. Equality and transparency during all examinations, events and activities held at NIT Srinagar. There should be no academic harassment by the faculty. Action must be taken against faculty and administration members who are involved in anti-national activity and violence. They have even threatened the students.

4. As Jammu and Kashmir Police has not been able to provide security and safe passage to leave the campus rather has lathi-charged the students and shot Tear Gas Shells on them. Therefore central forces should be engaged for the security of students of NIT Srinagar.

5. As fake reports and news has been spread and reported to the media, a full coverage of all the events that occurred should be given to the media along with current situation prevailing in the campus.

The students have threatened that until the mentioned demands are met, the university shall remain shut.
