Marking culmination of the nine-day long Durga puja festival, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday attended the ceremonial 'Ravana Vadh' function at the historic Gandhi Maidan amid incessant drizzle and windy weather condition.

Kumar formally inaugurated the 'Ravana Vadh' function by lighting a lamp and releasing balloons in the air before the effigies of Ravan, the mythological symbol of evil, his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhkarna were set on fire.

The sky lit with firecrackers as thousands of people, including children, watched the event with joy.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said the burning of Ravan's effigy marks the victory of the truth over evil. He also greeted the people on Dussehra festival. The organisers had preponed the function by a day anticipating rain and gloomy weather condition due to the impact of cyclone Phailin.

The organisers also faced a tough time in putting up the effigies in standing position for ceremonial burning after the paper coat and firecrackers planted inside had got wet due to rains. Elsewhere in Bihar, braving light to heavy rains people visited Durga puja pandals on Navami.
