No death penalty to Abu Salem: Govt
Minister of State for External Affairs, E Ahamed has said that Abu Salem would not be punished with the death penalty or with a prison term exceeding 25 years.

New Delhi: Government on Thursday decided that Abu Salem Ansari would not be punished with the death penalty or with a prison term exceeding 25 years, as per the solemn guarantees given to the Portuguese Government.

Minister of State for External Affairs, E Ahamed said in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

"The Government of India provided solemn guarantees to the Portuguese Government. According to the Portuguese Constitution these guarantees were required before his extradition could be processed," he said.

He added that the request for extradition of Taher Mohd Merchant, an absconder in 1993 Bombay Bomb Blast cases, is pending with the Government of UAE.

On Wednesday, the Special Designated Tada Court put Salem in judicial custody till December 20.

The action now moves to Friday with most of the accused in the 93 serial blasts case expected to be present at the TADA court in Mumbai.

With quite a few high profile names expected to be among them, this could be a very important day in the history of the serial blasts case.
