CHENNAI: What began as a drizzle on Thursday evening continued well into the wee hours of Friday, with increasing intensity, till a large part of the city was inundated. Apparently having learnt from the monsoon spells last month, Chennai Corporation authorities appeared to have done a reasonable job with the storm water drains, as the water drained away in most arterial stretches late on Friday morning.

In the city, Anna University station and Airport observatory recorded 10 cm of rainfall, while the DGP Office station received 9 cm rain. As of 5.30 pm on Friday, Meenambakkam received 3.2 cm rain and Nungambakkam 3.6 cm.

Warning of squally weather has been issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre, with wind speeds reaching 55-60 km per hour off the south Tamil Nadu coast until Saturday.

A low pressure has shown movement in the North West direction towards the Arabian Sea, said Ramanan, director, Regional Meteorological Centre. Fishermen have been urged not to venture into the sea off the Kerala and south TN coasts.
