Cardiff (Wales): England avoided an eighth straight limited-overs defeat when the first one-day international cricket match against Pakistan was declared a no result at rain-hit Sophia Gardens.
England was sent in and bowled for 202 by Pakistan, which chased a revised total of 159 over in 32 overs due to a 90-minute rain delay, and was 46-1 after seven overs before a second rain delay eventually forced the day/night fixture to be abandoned.
Pakistan, which beat England in a Twenty20 match on Monday, dominated the first of five one-dayers. Batsmen Mohammed Hafeez and Younis Khan combined for 30 off 35 balls before English umpire Ian Gould called the match.
Fast bowler Darren Gough -- making his 158th appearance in a one-dayer, second-most for England -- failed to secure his 236th career wicket, allowing 28 runs. Rookie bowler Stuart Broad earned his first wicket in his England debut, snaring Shoaib Malik leg before for 5.
Pakistan fast bowlers Mohammad Asif and Shoaib Akhtar shared six wickets as England failed to start well once again.
Asif's pace ousted England openers Andrew Strauss (2) and Marcus Trescothick (16) after just 41 balls to leave the hosts 35-2. Captain Strauss took over three overs for his score.
