HYDERABAD: Claims that promise to help your ward grow twice as fast or smarter on consumption of a specific brand of health drink might work no more. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) will soon bring out regulations to control the ‘tall claims’ without scientific backing, advertised by food product manufacturers. Director of the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) Dr B Sesikeran said the regulations will be in place soon. Addressing newspersons here on Tuesday, he announced that the golden jubilee conference of the Indian Dietetic Association (IDA) will be held at NIN, Hyderabad, from November 29 to Dec 1.He also said, “the increase in lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension will put a large number of Indians at the risk of chronic kidney failure and we are clearly not equipped to handle this situation.”The need for forming a central council for dietitians is likely to be a part of the agenda for the conference. “The Union government plans to bring together all medical councils under the common head of National Council for Human resource and Health. Till the decision falls in place, we would request the formation of a national council for dietitians which recognizes the registered practitioners,” said Sesikeran who cited the ambiguous reports on the benefit of consumption of certain food stuffs as the work of unqualified practitioners of dietetics.
