Intensifying his ‘hygiene drive,’ Health and Family Welfare Minister V S Vijay, after inspecting the Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital here on Thursday, ordered the suspension of a sanitary officer for slackness in duty.
After inaugurating the Clinical Nutrition Academy on the Madras Medical College-GRH campus, the Minister made a surprise inspection of the hospital.
When Vijay found the drinking water tank open with cobwebs and spiders, he ordered the suspension of senior sanitary officer Nirmal Kumar and castigated the officials for garbage pile-up, waste water logging.
The Minister then visited others departments of the hospital, including the mortuary and kitchen.
Speaking to reporters, he said, “Inspection will be done for another 10 days in all the hospitals in the city. After that, a report will be submitted to the CM. Inspection will also be carried out in other hospitals throughout the State.”
Meanwhile, the Chennai Corporation’s drive to hunt rodents in State-run city hospitals had a good outcome.
Around 35 rats were killed using rat poison at the Kasturba Gandhi Hospital for Women and Children alone. Moreover, 16 dogs were caught and taken away by the Blue Cross. In other government hospitals, more than 50 rodents and dogs were removed.
Kasturba Hospital director Meenalochini said, “About 150 nets have been kept in the hospital surroundings. We are also taking steps to appoint more sanitary workers in the hospital.”
Sources in the Health Department said that the Minister held a meeting of senior officials after his GH inspection. GH Dean Dr Kanagasabai, Director of Medical Education Dr Vamsathara, Corporation health officers and Public Works Department officials participated.
Issues including appointment of more conservancy workers and keeping mosquitoes, rodents and dogs away from hospitals were discussed.
