SALEM: The anti-land grabbing unit of the district police on Wednesday arrested Tamilarasu, the former MLA of Omalur from the PMK, and four others for allegedly usurping a Rs1-crore farmland near the Salem airport in Kamalapuram.A case was booked against the five on July 23 and four persons, including three women, were arrested. Tamilarasu had absconded after the case was filed. He was nabbed on Wednesday from an undisclosed location. According to complainant Madhaiyan (41), Perumal Boyan of Pottiapuram near Kamalapuram, Omalur, had sold his 1.58-acre land to Venkatachalam in 1973. In 2000, Venkatachalam sold it to Madhaiyan of Salem. That September, however, Boyan’s wife, Rajammal (60), her niece, Kanupillai (50), and daughter Kannamma (40) allegedly handed over the power of attorney to the land to Tamilarasu by forging papers. Tamilarasu later sold the plot to Rathinam and Manickam of the same village. But they have no documents to prove their claim over it, as per the special anti-land grab cell. Rathinam and Manickam, close aides of Tamilarasu, are PMK functionaries, said Inspector S Dakshinamoorthy. Even after the Mettur sub-court upheld Madhaiyan’s rights over the land, he has been unable to take possession of it because of the obstruction by Tamilarasu, Rathinam and Manickam. After the special cell was formed, Madhaiyan forwarded a complaint to Salem SP N M Mayilvahanan on July 17, who directed the special cell to probe it.Dakshinamoorthy said that investigations revealed illegal sale and occupation of the land. On the basis of the probe, the police booked cases under sections 420, 468 and 471 of the IPC. An absconding Tamilarasu was nabbed on Wednesday and remanded in judicial custody.
