BALASORE: As many as 61 persons were hospitalised after inhaling poisonous gas leaked from a chemical factory at Maitapur under Simulia police limits on Saturday evening. Sources said the gas leaked from Krushi Rasayan Kendra, a pesticide manufacturing plant, while the workers were liquidising the gas. The gas spread to nearby villages including Maitapur, Ambila, Muruna market, Jagadalpur, Ranital, Juragadia and Mohantipokhari located close to the plant.People, mostly women and children, complained of vomiting after inhaling the gas. They were soon rushed to Maitapur, Ranital and Bhadrak headquarters hospital and provided treatment. CDMO Iqbaluddin Ahmed on Sunday said the villagers were discharged after first aid.“The substance was in solid form. The incident occurred when the plant workers were turning it to liquid state to prepare the pesticide used to destroy weeds and grasses,” the CDMO said. Meanwhile, ADM Rasid Khan, district agriculture officer Umesh Sahu, a senior official from Krushi Vigyan Kendra at Ranital, Prasanta Behera, Simulia medical officer Bijay Panda and several other officials visited the plant to take stock of the situation. The plant employees fled soon after the incident. Khan said a probe has been ordered and the Odisha State Pollution Control Board had been informed about it.
