New Delhi: Poland had one of the favourites for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, England, in their qualification group but still managed to qualify ahead of them for the finals.

The Poles have good memories of Germany and they were third in the 1974 tournament and repeated the performance eight years later at Spain 1982.

Coached by Janas Pawel, the Poles lost only to England in their qualifiers but won all their remaining eight qualifiers.

Their keeper Jerzy Dudek has already declared, "We want to make new history."

Poland have had success in some big tournament and were the giold medalist at the Olympic Football Tournament in Munich 1972.

But their performance at Korea/Japan 2002 proved a big damp squib as they failed to book their place for the knockout stage.

And then they also failed to reach the UEFA Euro 2004 finals.

The first-choice strike pairing of Maciej Zurawski and Tomas Frankowski amassed a total of 14 goals in qualifying and will spearhead the latest quest for fresh glories.
