VIJAYAWADA: The city and its suburbans (Vijayawada rural, Kankipadu and Penamaluru mandals) created a record on Saturday by consuming 5.18 MU (million units) of power against the allotted quota of 4.2 MU. The power consumption in Krishna district also stood at a record high of 10.8 MU against the allocation of 10.5 MU on May 6.The record in power consumption in the district is largely attributed to increase in use of electrical appliances by people to ward off the summer heat. The increase in use of power by industrial and agricultural sectors is also another reason for the rise in consumption.Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Ltd (APSPDCL) lifted power cut in the district recently. According to Vijayawada Circle APSPDCL SE B Mohanakrishna, the availability of power is also one of the reasons for the rise in consumption.Though there is no official power cut, load shedding has become a routine in the city due to increase in power consumption in Vijayawada. The city needs 10 more 33/11 KV substations in addition to the existing 34, according to APSPDCL officials. There are 13.25 lakh power consumers in Krishna district.
