Harshad Ponda will be the new counsel for Praveen Mahajan, accused of killing his elder brother Pramod Mahanjan.

Mumbai: Senior Criminal Lawyer Harshad Ponda will be the new counsel for Praveen Mahajan, who is accused of killing his elder brother and senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan.

Additional Sessions Judge Srihari P Davare, who was assigned the high-profile case, was informed on Friday of the appointment of Ponda, who will now defend his case.

On August 21, the court granted time till Friday to Praveen Mahajan to get a lawyer after he dropped his previous counsel.

Praveen was not brought to the court on Friday in view of shortage of security personnel as majority of them were put on the security duty for Ganpati festival.

The court had then extended his judicial custody till September 8.

Praveen has been accused of shooting his brother Pramod Mahajan at the latter's Worli residence on April 22. Mahajan succumbed to his injuries at P D Hinduja Hospital on May 3.

Immediately after filing the chargesheet on July 14, Praveen had moved a bail plea before a fast track sessions court which was rejected on August one on the grounds that there was strong prima facie evidence against him and the offence was serious in nature.
