KOCHI: The National Highway Protection Council has condemned the state government’s move to provide police protection for collecting toll on the Angamaly-Mannuthy stretch of the NH 47. The council has said that by permitting toll collection the government has neglected the High Court order and challenged the laws of the land. It has also warned a state-wide agitation would be launched soon, if the company continued with toll collection. The toll collection was stopped after intense protests by the local people. The company which has undertaken the road work on a build-operate-transfer (BOT) basis had approached the court seeking police protection. But the court had dismissed the petition and directed that the toll would be a burden on the common man and the amount collected by the company has to be reviewed, a release from the council said. The case was adjourned to the second week of this month. But the government, which ignored the court order, has granted police protection to the BOT company and gave nod to the company to resume collecting toll.Though the court had ordered to review the toll amount, the company has persisted with the same amount, the council alleged.
