The prestigious Quacquarelli Symonds aka QS BRICS University Rankings 2018 are out and India’s Top 3 IITs and IISc Bangalore have made it to the Top 20 BRICS Institutions list. Approximately 300 Institutions across the BRICS nations viz Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa were graded for the BRICS QS Rankings 2018 and 3 IITs namely IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras besides IISc Bangalore have ranked in the Top 20.

The QS Rankings 2018 of these BRICS Varsities are adjudged on Eight Key Performance Indicators viz:

1. Academic Reputation – 30%

As per UGC Chairman V.S. Chauhan, “Role of ranking in terms of students getting to know about the institutions can’t be negated, but also sometimes overplayed. Rankings are relevant for institutions and most importantly because of the rankings what happened in India is that institutions have started to look at themselves.”

Amongst the Top 3, China claimed its education sector supremacy with Tsinghua University-Beijing at #1, Peking University-Beijing at #2 and Fudan University-Shanghai at #3. All three universities have maintained their last year’s positions.

In QS BRICS Rankings last year, IISc Bangalore was the only Indian Varsity to make it to the Top 10 with Rank#6, however the Institution has dropped from its place this year.

It is also notable that amongst the BRICS nations, India had the second highest representation of Universities in the QS Rankings 2017, for which Chauhan added, “We will celebrate that day when of 350 universities 150 of them will be Indian institutions in the BRICS rankings.”
