New Delhi: The Supreme Court may have put a stay on all quota proceedings in Centrally-funded academic institutions for now, but the costs of increasing the seats in IITs and IIMs haven’t come down.
Industry body Assocham says the Government should spend Rs 2,122 crore irrespective of the apex court stay. "The sum of Rs 2,122 crore allocated in Budget 2007-08 towards implementation of the Oversight Committee recommendations for enhancing number of seats in IITs, IIMs and NITs should be spent anyway, irrespective of the court stay on 27 per cent OBC reservation," a chamber statement issued on Tuesday said.
While IITs continue to require the maximum share - Rs 988 crore – the All India Council for Technical Educations (AICTE) come a close second with Rs 780 crore being required to be invested there.
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and IIMs have been allocated Rs 90 crore and Rs 80 crore respectively.
"The money provided in the Budget must be spent on creating not only additional capacities but also opening new institutions of excellence. If needed, more money should be earmarked," Assocham President Venugopal Dhoot was quoted as saying in the statement.
The industry body statement also notes that while the annual requirement of skilled workers to sustain the growth momentum of the economy is close to 25 lakh, Against this the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) can train only seven lakh of the 100 lakh students passing out of the schools which need to be upgraded.
