RAYAGADA: Train services in the Visakhapatnam division of the East Coast Railway were disrupted on Wednesday following a 12-hour rail roko agitation by Yuva Vikas Parishad at Rayagada Railway Station. They have been demanding additional bogies in the Hirakhand Express and extension of an Intercity Express to Bhubaneswar. The Railway authorities had to cancel, short-terminate and divert a number of trains passing through Rayagada. Trains plying between Visakhapatnam and Koraput were cancelled including the Visakhapatnam - Durg Passenger. Similarly, trains from Howrah and Sambalpur were short-terminated at Titlagarh. Visakhapatnam-Nizamuddin Samata Express, Dhanbad-Allepy Super-fast Express and Hatia-Yashwantpur were diverted.According to Parishad members, against the promised five additional bogies in the Hirakhand Express, the railway authorities approved only two. With four engineering colleges and three major industries, the train services to Rayagada leave much to be desired, said Shivaji Das, who is leading the protest. He threatened that the Parishad would stop goods trains for an indefinite period if their demands are not immediately conceded.
