New Delhi: Indian Railways has initiated an audit of food safety standards in base kitchens and pantry cars of trains across India, in an effort to provide healthy and hygienic food.
"The food safety audit is done for stalls on railway platforms, kiosks and food plaza joints also," Railway Ministry sources said.
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is also conducting training programmes regularly for both departmental as well as staff of private licensees working in kitchens on running trains, they said.
Asked if the IRCTC was planning to offer different cuisines in trains, they said regional cuisines are being served in Rajdhani/Shatabdi trains and standard casserole meals in other Mail/Express trains keeping in mind the taste of the majority of passengers traveling in these trains.
Besides, a variety of regional cuisines are introduced in Mail/Express trains, they said.
Steps were also taken to ensure international standard for cleanliness and quality catering services which include obtaining ISO certification, food audit by professional agency and special cleanliness and hygiene drive in pantry cars.
