CHENNAI / TIRUCHY / MADURAI: Incessant rains under the influence of a low pressure over Kanyakumari on Friday hit normal life in Tiruchy, Madurai and other parts of Southern Tamil Nadu even as the weatherman predicted more rains for the State. The administration in the rain-hit districts declared a holiday for schools but office-goers bore the brunt of the torrential downpour that led to widespread flooding during Friday morning.According to the Met department, a well-marked low pressure area over Kanyakumari was likely to intensify into a depression and cause more rainfall in most parts of the state. A warning for squally weather has been issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre, which has forecast that squally weather with wind speed reaching 55-60 kmph is likely off South Tamil Nadu coast till Saturday. .In Tiruchy, vehicles were made to wade through water-logged roads. Most of the interior roads were damaged and numerous pot holes hindered driving. For office-goers and parents in Madurai who wanted to drop their wards to school, commuting was a big ordeal. There were no traffic police to regulate the vehicle flow at the bridges and the commuters got stranded at Periyar bus stand. “It is good that they have declared holiday for Saturday. On Friday we had to call all the school teachers till 8.30 am to find out if there was school,” said B Parveena, whose son is a class I student.Ramanathapuram too was pounded by rains, but the farmers were happy. The low pressure indicated movement in the North West direction towards the Arabian Sea, said S R Ramanan, Director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai. In Chennai, the Anna University station and the Airport observatory received 10 cms of rainfall, and the DGP Office station, 9 cm.
