In spite of being relatively new in the film industry, Rajkumar Yadav has done some impressive films with the most sought after filmmakers in a short span of time. As he gets ready for the biggest film of his career - 'Kai Po Che!', Rajkumar spoke candidly to IBNLive about his life and how blessed he feels to be a part of good cinema.
Yadav, who is on a multi-city promotion trip with the cast and crew of 'Kai Po Che!' admits that it can get physically tiring to travel across the country but is quick to add that 'promoting films is the need of the hour. One really can't escape it.'
Yadav first appeared in Dibakar Banerjee's experimental film, 'LSD - Love, Sex Aur Dhoka' as a sleazy Delhi boy who shoots a sex video on the sly which caught the attention of several filmmakers and got him the lead role in Ekta Kapoor's 'Raagini MMS' and a small guest role in Bejoy Nambiar's 'Shaitaan'.
The actor, who dabbled in theatre during his school and college years in Delhi, went to Film and Television Institute of India, Pune for a two year acting course post his graduation. "I always wanted to be an actor. While in Delhi, I did lot of theatre, I am trained dancer so for me acting in films was the obvious choice for a career."
For an outsider, Yadav's stint in films so far may seem like a dream, considering he has worked with some of the best filmmakers of the industry in the initial years of his career, but Yadav has had to rough it out in Mumbai before getting his big break.
"I came to Mumbai in 2009 and had to struggle for one and half years in the city. There were days when I didn't have money to pay the bus fare also. But I was prepared to fight it out. My father always said that life is a struggle, so I took it in my stride. It took a while to get a film, but I'm glad that it happened at the right time."
Having already worked with Anurag Kashyap, Dibakar Banerjee and now Abhishek Kapoor - is there any other filmmaker who Yadav has on his wishlist? "I want to be part of good films. That's all. Even if the roles are small, like the one I did in 'Shaitaan' it has to be relevant".
With a solid background in theatre, Yadav finds films a more difficult medium. "In theatres, we put many hours of rehearsal before performing live in front of the audience. It is a practiced medium. In films lot of technicalities have to be considered before actually shooting a scene. Besides, there is always a problem of continuity in films. The scene you shoot first may not have any connection with next scene. So as an actor you have to adapt yourself to the situation every time. Theatre happens in one flow, which is good."
The actor plays hard working, money minded Govind in Abhishek Kapoor's new film and has three other films lined up for this year. "Hansal Mehta's 'Shahid' will release next after 'Kai Po Che!', the film is a biopic on human rights activist Shahid Azmi's life. I play the title role in it. Then there is a film with Mira Nair and film called 'Queens' with Kangana Ranaut."
