BANGALORE: The excise department is mulling over amending existing laws to help manufacture of liquor with beetroot.Excise Minister M P Renukacharya said that several sugar manufacturing firms, including Renuka Sugars and Godavari Sugars, have approached the state government seeking permission to manufacture Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) using beetroot.He said that a technical evaluation committee which went through the proposal recommended that licenses be awarded to two sugar units to manufacture the liquor, and that the licenses would be granted soon.“The law does not make provisions to give license to manufacture liquor from beetroot,” he said. “Amendments would be introduced in the next session of the legislature.” This law would all non-fruit variants also, he said. Manufacture of liquor from beetroot, he said, would benefit the farming community in arid districts, in addition to generating employment in rural areas and bringing additional revenue to farmers.Adding that several hotels in the city have come forward to install micro-breweries in their premises, the minister said that one such unit with 500-litre capacity has come up. Many such micro-breweries will come up in the city, he said.
