Howrah: Going berserk in a mutiny, prisoners clashed with securitymen, showered stones and set fire to documents at the Howrah District Correctional Centre on Thursday injuring several persons.

Official sources said a sizable number of prisoners, who had been agitating against the alleged torture by wardens and the poor quality of food, suddenly went on a rampage by pelting stones and other missiles.

They also stormed a room and set fire to important documents prompting the authorities to press the alarm bell.

Superintendent of Police Niraj Kumar Singh reached the spot with a large contingent.

The situation was still tense but under control, the sources said.

The prisoners, who had long been complaining about the poor quality of food provided to them, were also said to be nursing a grouse against 'police highhandedness' in the process of the inquiry into the escape of Dilip Singh, a criminal.
