Aligarh: After Thursday's communal riots that left four people dead and at least 13 injured, the Uttar Pradesh town remains tense.
Curfew has been imposed in several sensitive areas in the old city of Aligarh and at least as 86 people have been taken into custody and questioned by the police.
Nearly 1,000 Rapid Action Force (RAF) and state paramilitary and police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, the state government has also swung into action and District Magistrate, Rajesh Kumar has been transferred.
The Additional District Magistrate, Satyawan and the Superintendent of Police, Surinder Kumar Verma have been suspended.
The clashes began on Thursday after decorative lights put up at a temple to celebrate Ram Navmi were removed by a group of people protesting against the use of loudspeakers in temples.
Trouble began on Wednesday night when Muslims objected to loudspeakers being used in preparation for the next morning's prayers at Chamunda Devi temple.
However, following the intervention of senior citizens and local officials, things were settled and the use of loudspeakers was stopped.
But on Thursday morning, devotees began using the loudspeakers again, triggering violence and clashes.
Irate mobs used bamboo sticks, knives and even firearms in the clashes.
The police confirmed that firearms were used in the violence.
